What the learner should do
Learn linking words like because, however, although, therefore, and for example to connect ideas clearly when you speak and write. Practice with free exercises.
What must become clear
Can-do: By the end, you can connect ideas through addition, contrast, concession, reason, result, example, clarification, sequence, and conclusion; choose between a conjunction, a dependent-clause linker, a phrase linker, and a sentence connector; punctuate high-value patterns; place also naturally; distinguish neutral conversation from more formal proposal language; make important relationships audible through chunking and stress; reject a connector when the logic is unsupported; and give a 90-second fictional recommendation that another person can reconstruct and challenge.
High-value friction points
- Although the survey is limited, it identifies a concern. / The survey is limited, but it identifies a concern.Although plus a dependent clause and but plus coordinated clauses are alternative contrast frames in standard edited English.
- The shuttle is useful because the workshop ends after the last direct bus.Because introduces the full clause the workshop ends; because of would require a noun phrase such as the late workshop ending.
- The trial is short. However, the committee will collect five relevant measures.A comma alone should not join two independent clauses with however. A period before and comma after the connector creates a clear B1 pattern.
Protect these lesson moments
- Reactivate familiar connections
- Discovery check: name what each linker tells the listener
- Classify the relationship before choosing wording
- Complete the exact grammatical frame
- Choose the requested relationship and sentence shape
Learner production
Relationship cards: The tutor says addition, contrast, concession, reason, result, example, clarification, sequence , or conclusion . Give one sentence pair from the fictional file and state why the relationship fits.
- Register switch: Give a relaxed spoken version with but, too , or final though . Then give a neutral-formal written version with however, in addition , or overall . Keep the relationship and evidence unchanged.
- Evidence challenge: Your partner says Therefore before an unsupported conclusion. Ask what evidence connects the ideas, then reformulate the claim with a narrower result or a clear limitation.
- One-minute edit: Take six disconnected notes. Group related ideas, remove one unnecessary linker, add one missing relationship, and explain each remaining choice.

Spanish → English
2 patterns to test
Put the subject before the verb
- Possible transfer
Yesterday arrived my cousin from Lima.
- English rebuild
My cousin from Lima arrived yesterday.
Why it can happen: Spanish can place the subject after the verb, especially with verbs of arriving, appearing, or happening, as in llegó el paquete. Ordinary English statements keep the subject before the verb, even when a time phrase comes first.
- The package finally arrived this morning.
- Last week, a new manager started in our department.
Give your own view with in my opinion
- Possible transfer
According to me, the plan is too expensive.
- English rebuild
In my opinion, the plan is too expensive.
Why it can happen: Spanish según can introduce the speaker’s own view as well as someone else’s. English according to normally reports another person or a source, so a personal opinion sounds more natural with in my opinion, I think, or from my point of view.
- According to the report, sales fell in March.
- In my opinion, we should wait until the next quarter.
Ukrainian → English
One pattern to test
Use although or but, not both together
- Possible transfer
Although it was late, but we continued working.
- English rebuild
Although it was late, we continued working. / It was late, but we continued working.
Why it can happen: Ukrainian commonly pairs хоча in the first clause with але in the second, and the combination is accepted in standard usage. English marks the contrast only once, so a sentence uses either although or though at the start, or but between the clauses.
- Even though the budget was small, the campaign worked well.
- The hotel was expensive, but the location was perfect.
Mandarin Chinese → English
One pattern to test
Use one English connector for contrast or cause
- Possible transfer
Although the hotel was expensive, but the room was small. / Because it rained, so we stayed home.
- English rebuild
Although the hotel was expensive, the room was small. / Because it rained, we stayed home.
Why it can happen: Mandarin commonly pairs connectors across two clauses, such as 虽然 (suīrán) with 但是 (dànshì) and 因为 (yīnwèi) with 所以 (suǒyǐ). English uses one connector for each relationship: although or but, because or so, but not both in the same sentence.
- Although the train was late, we made it to the interview.
- The client changed the deadline, so we worked through the weekend.
French → English
One pattern to test
Frame opinions without doubling the pronoun
- Possible transfer
Me, I think the plan is too expensive.
- English rebuild
Personally, I think the plan is too expensive.
Why it can happen: French often fronts a stressed pronoun to mark contrast or personal stance: moi, je pense que. In English, me, I can sound abrupt or unclear. Speakers mark stance with phrases such as personally, for me, or as for me, or with stress on I.
- Personally, I’d rather fly than take the train.
- As for me, I’m happy to work from home.
Use while teaching
Operational teaching notes
Choose a route before class, but change it when the learner’s production gives you better evidence.
Ask before explaining
- Which examples in “Reactivate familiar connections” express the same core meaning?
- How would you explain this decision in your own words: Can-do: By the end, you can connect ideas through addition, contrast, concession, reason, result, example, clarification, sequence, and conclusion; choose between a conjunction, a dependent-clause linker, a phrase linker, and a sentence connector; punctuate high-value patterns; place also naturally; distinguish neutral conversation from more formal proposal language; make important relationships audible through chunking and stress; reject a connector when the logic is unsupported; and give a 90-second fictional recommendation that another person can reconstruct and challenge.
- What needs to change in this repair, and why: Although the survey is limited, it identifies a concern. / The survey is limited, but it identifies a concern.
Correct for the stage
- Controlled work: correct immediately, then require the complete repaired sentence.
- Fluency building: note repeated errors and reformulate after the learner finishes the thought.
- Communication: interrupt only when meaning breaks down or the target decision is the lesson’s main evidence.
Retrieve, do not reteach

Short, core, or extended
Choose the route
All three routes end in learner production. More time means more contrast and transfer, not a longer explanation.
Short route
Retrieve for 3 minutes. Notice and discover for 8. Use the two most diagnostic tasks from Reactivate familiar connections and Discovery check: name what each linker tells the listener for 12. Protect 9 minutes for Learner production, then reflect for 3.
Core route
Follow the six-stage sequence below. Reduce repeated controlled items when accuracy is already stable, but keep the nearest useful contrast and final production.
Stretch route
Add Tutor-read connector chunking, reduced conjunctions, contrast stress, final though, and cause-result listening check · Next-day logical relationship, because-because of form, however punctuation, register, and evidence-bound conclusion retrieval, then repeat the communication task with a new situation or stricter success criteria.
60–70 minutes core working plan
Session sequence
Protect the final communication and reflection time. If the learner needs more support, reduce the number of controlled items instead of removing production.
- 5 min
Retrieve
Activate what the learner already controls and check any prerequisite language.
Teacher move: Open with the first practice route: Reactivate familiar connections · Discovery check: name what each linker tells the listener · Classify the relationship before choosing wording.
- 6–8 min
Notice
Let the learner observe meaning and form in a small sample before naming the rule.
Teacher move: Keep the noticing conversation anchored to this decision: Can-do: By the end, you can connect ideas through addition, contrast, concession, reason, result, example, clarification, sequence, and conclusion; choose between a conjunction, a dependent-clause linker, a phrase linker, and a sentence connector; punctuate high-value patterns; place also naturally; distinguish neutral conversation from more formal proposal language; make important relationships audible through chunking and stress; reject a connector when the logic is unsupported; and give a 90-second fictional recommendation that another person can reconstruct and challenge.
- 8–10 min
Discover
Connect form, meaning, use, word order, and the nearest useful contrast.
Teacher move: Test the learner’s explanation against this repair: Although the survey is limited, it identifies a concern. / The survey is limited, but it identifies a concern. Although plus a dependent clause and but plus coordinated clauses are alternative contrast frames in standard edited English.

Build + drill
Move from accurate choices to faster retrieval and sentence construction.
Teacher move: Prioritize these lesson tasks: Reactivate familiar connections · Discovery check: name what each linker tells the listener · Classify the relationship before choosing wording · Complete the exact grammatical frame. Reduce repetitions if needed, but keep the final production time.
- 12–15 min
Communicate
Use the target language for a real adult purpose the learner cannot complete by copying.
Teacher move: Learner production: Relationship cards: The tutor says addition, contrast, concession, reason, result, example, clarification, sequence , or conclusion . Give one sentence pair from the fictional file and state why the relationship fits.

Starting evidence
What did the learner already control? What was the first misconception, hesitation, or contrast that mattered?
Did the principle become clear?
Can-do: By the end, you can connect ideas through addition, contrast, concession, reason, result, example, clarification, sequence, and conclusion; choose between a conjunction, a dependent-clause linker, a phrase linker, and a sentence connector; punctuate high-value patterns; place also naturally; distinguish neutral conversation from more formal proposal language; make important relationships audible through chunking and stress; reject a connector when the logic is unsupported; and give a 90-second fictional recommendation that another person can reconstruct and challenge.
Did the first hint help?
Record the first item that caused difficulty and whether the contextual hint led to self-correction before the full repair appeared.
Could the learner do the outcome?
Learn linking words like because, however, although, therefore, and for example to connect ideas clearly when you speak and write. Practice with free exercises.
Listen for: The learner uses the target language independently for a real purpose.
What remained available?
If possible, check before rereading in the next session. Record what returned independently and what still required a cue.
Keep, revise, or investigate?
Note any explanation the tutor still had to supply, the smallest useful revision, and whether another pilot should test the same issue.
